Autumn at My Door

I’ve decided I need a new wreath on my door. New wreath for a new season.

Because my current wreath speaks of spring.

Back when we all began the “Stay Safe, Stay Home” thing, I’d only begun to get to know my new neighbors.

So I was thinking of ways to still build some relationships even while we were hunkered down for, what we imagined was, maybe three or four months. Because we were hopeful back then.

Anyway, I went through my box of spring decorations and found a couple of floral crowns I’d made years before. And I thought the darling little girl who lived next door would love one. Full of flowers with long ribbons running down the back, she’s be adorable!

So I hung one on my door to replace the out-of-date Valentine’s Day wreath that was there, and I left a smaller one on my neighbors door with her name on it.

Or so I thought.

They had introduced themselves when we first met but I’m terrible at remembering names when I first hear them. I am always focused on remembering faces and saying intelligent things and can’t mange to get that first reference to names to stick. And, really, I have to see things in writing to really get them into my head.

But I remembered her name started with a C.

And this is where I really go astray.

When I log into my WiFi I can, of course see the other WiFi networks around me. And I noticed that one of them was a name that started with a C. And I jump to the conclusion that they must have named their network using their daughter’s name, because I have seen this before. Along with sports teams, and mottoes and “CIA Covert Operations”.

And that’s the name I wrote on the tag on the flower crown.

Which was wrong.

I began to suspect it was wrong when day after day it was still hanging there untouched. There’s nothing worse than leaving a surprise for someone and having them ignore it. (There was this sandwich incident back in college…nevermind)

Eventually I run into her father and I mentioned that it was a gift for his little girl and he seemed a little puzzled which was when it dawned on my I had gotten it all wrong and how embarrassing.

So we got that settle but they decided to leave it on their door. So both of our doors, which are side by side, have the same decor.

And every time I see theirs, I remember my mistake.

Anyway, I need a wreath for fall. I need change.

I can’t really wander about the craft store looking for inspiration but the other day we had a big windstorm and this morning the road was covered with these beautiful green acorns. So I gathered them and and now I’m wondering, can I make an acorn and oak leaf wreath?

How pretty that would be.
